U.S. Attorney who approved Epstein's 2008 NPA; resigned as Labor Secretary in 2019
Alexander Acosta, who as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida negotiated the controversial 2008 non-prosecution agreement (NPA) with Jeffrey Epstein, resigned as U.S. Secretary of Labor on July 12, 2019, under intense public and political pressure after Epstein was re-arrested on federal sex trafficking charges. Acosta stated at the announcement: 'I do not think it is fair for this administration's Labor Department to have Epstein as its focus rather than the incredible economy we have today.' In November 2020, the DOJ's Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) concluded that Acosta exercised 'poor judgment' in the Epstein plea deal — particularly in failing to notify victims and using a flawed NPA mechanism — but stopped short of finding professional misconduct or corruption. In 2025, amid renewed congressional scrutiny, Acosta voluntarily appeared before the House Oversight Committee in a six-hour interview on September 19, 2025, defending his handling of the case. He was subsequently asked to clarify portions of his testimony after Bloomberg News reporting revealed that his office had investigated Epstein for money laundering — something Acosta said he did not recall — raising questions about the completeness of his sworn account to Congress.
Alexander Acosta resigned as U.S. Labor Secretary amid public outcry and scrutiny over his role in negotiating a controversial non-prosecution plea deal for Jeffrey Epstein as a federal prosecutor.
