Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division during the relevant period
Alice S. Fisher served as Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice from 2005 to May 23, 2008, a period that encompassed the Jeffrey Epstein case in Florida under U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta. During her tenure, Epstein's lawyers unsuccessfully lobbied Fisher and other DOJ officials to stop the sex crimes prosecution. Epstein's attorney Ken Starr sent Fisher a letter appealing the U.S. Attorney's intention to notify victims of a pending plea deal; Fisher stated her office did not make decisions related to victim notification, which were ultimately made by the U.S. Attorney's office. Fisher's role was administrative and supervisory rather than prosecutorial, and no evidence indicates she was arrested, charged, convicted, sentenced, under investigation, or civilly sued in connection with the Epstein case.
