Convicted financier who asked President Trump to reduce his prison sentence
Bernard Madoff has no documented direct involvement in Jeffrey Epstein's crimes. His name appears in the Epstein case solely as a comparative reference made by Leslie Wexner during a deposition. Wexner testified that Epstein was far worse than Madoff, stating: "He would make Bernie Madoff look like a boy scout. So complete — so diabolical. I mean, just incredible, sinister." This was Wexner's way of contextualizing the severity of Epstein's alleged theft and misconduct. Peripheral overlaps between the two men have been noted: both were wealthy financiers with Palm Beach estates, both banked at JPMorgan Chase, and Epstein reportedly bid on an apartment building that had previously housed Madoff. However, none of these constitute evidence of collaboration or shared criminal conduct. Madoff is not mentioned in any unsealed Epstein court documents as a participant, associate, or co-conspirator in Epstein's sex trafficking operation. He was convicted and sentenced to 150 years in prison in 2009 for operating a massive Ponzi scheme — entirely separate from the Epstein case. Madoff died on April 14, 2021, at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, from chronic kidney disease, while still serving that sentence.
