United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York
Damian Williams is an American lawyer who served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) from 2021 to 2024. He was nominated by President Biden and was the first Black man to hold the position. In the context of the Jeffrey Epstein case, Williams played the role of the lead federal prosecutor overseeing the government's case against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate and alleged co-conspirator. Williams did not face any personal legal jeopardy in this matter. He was the government's chief legal officer prosecuting it. The Maxwell trial concluded in December 2021 with a guilty verdict on five of six counts, including sex trafficking of a minor and conspiracy charges. Williams publicly praised the survivors who testified, stating he wanted to commend their bravery for stepping out of the shadows to face their abuser. Following the verdict, Williams' office also handled Maxwell's sentencing proceedings, which resulted in a 20-year prison sentence. Williams also oversaw other major prosecutions during his tenure, including cases against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and Senator Robert Menendez. Williams announced his resignation effective December 13, 2024, after President-elect Trump announced his intention to replace Williams with former SEC chair Jay Clayton. Williams described leaving as bittersweet, calling the SDNY his dream job. His role in the Epstein case is that of a government prosecutor and institutional representative, not a subject of investigation or prosecution.
