Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader
George J. Mitchell, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, has been named in Epstein-related allegations by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed in 2016 court documents that she was directed by Epstein to have sexual encounters with Mitchell. Mitchell has consistently and explicitly denied these allegations, stating in 2019 that he 'never met, spoken with or had any contact with Ms. Giuffre' and that he 'never observed or suspected any inappropriate conduct with underage girls.' Following the February 2026 release of over 3 million Epstein files, which revealed extensive correspondence between Epstein and Mitchell from 2010-2013 regarding attempted meetings years after Epstein's 2008 conviction, Mitchell resigned as honorary chair of the Mitchell Institute and multiple institutions removed his name from programs and commemorations. Mitchell's spokesperson reiterated his categorical denial of Giuffre's allegations and stated that Mitchell 'profoundly regrets' his past association with Epstein. Notably, Mitchell was not listed in Epstein's personal contact book or flight logs, and Epstein's former pilot Larry Visoski testified in 2021 that while Mitchell may have flown on Epstein's planes, he never witnessed sexual activity. Mitchell has not been arrested, charged, convicted, or sentenced in connection with any Epstein-related matters.

George Mitchell denied ever meeting, speaking with, or having any contact with Virginia Giuffre, who alleged he was trafficked to her by Jeffrey Epstein, and stated he was unaware of Epstein's crimes until reported in the media.
