Steven Hoffenberg was an American businessman and convicted fraudster who founded Towers Financial Corporation, one of the largest Ponzi schemes in American history. He hired Jeffrey Epstein in 1987 as a paid consultant and later claimed Epstein was intimately involved in the scheme as his 'uncharged co-conspirator.' Hoffenberg was convicted of five criminal charges in 1995 and sentenced to 20 years in prison in 1997, serving until his release in 2013. He subsequently filed civil lawsuits against Epstein in 2016 and 2018, both of which were withdrawn due to statute of limitations concerns. Hoffenberg died in August 2022 at age 77.
