Vitaly Churkin was a Russian diplomat who served as Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2006 until his death in February 2017. According to Department of Justice documents released in January 2026, Churkin met with Jeffrey Epstein multiple times between 2016 and 2017. The documents indicate Epstein facilitated an internship for Churkin's son, Maxim, at a New York investment firm in late 2016, and the two discussed Trump's psychology and negotiating style. Epstein also attempted to use Churkin as a channel to meet with other Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. There is no evidence in the released documents that Churkin engaged in any illegal activity or was complicit in Epstein's sex trafficking operations. The documents establish Churkin's presence in Epstein's network of Russian contacts but do not indicate criminal accountability.
