Former CEO of Barclays; resigned over Epstein ties
Jes Staley, former CEO of Barclays Bank and JPMorgan Chase executive, is under investigation by U.S. federal authorities in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein case. Staley resigned from Barclays in 2021 after inquiries into his relationship with Epstein. Federal prosecutors reviewed allegations of sexual misconduct against Staley, with a December 2019 memo documenting claims by an alleged victim. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) upheld a ban on Staley from senior management roles in July 2025, finding he 'recklessly' misled regulators about his relationship with Epstein and fining him £1.1 million. Staley testified under oath that he alerted JPMorgan executives to Epstein's 2008 guilty plea. He has acknowledged a consensual sexual encounter with a member of Epstein's staff in 2010. No criminal charges have been filed against Staley to date, though lawmakers have called for DOJ investigation.
The FCA issued a Decision Notice fining Staley £1.8 million and banning him from holding a senior management function in the financial services industry. The FCA found he had 'recklessly' misled regulators about the nature and extent of his relationship with Epstein in a letter submitted in October 2019.
