Convicted sex offender; financier; died in custody August 2019
Jeffrey Epstein faced two major waves of legal accountability. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to Florida state charges of solicitation of prostitution and solicitation of prostitution of a minor under 18, receiving an 18-month sentence in a minimum-security facility with work-release privileges; he was released in July 2009 and registered as a Level 3 sex offender. In July 2019, federal agents arrested Epstein at Teterboro Airport on a Manhattan federal indictment charging him with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors, covering alleged abuse of dozens of underage girls in New York and Florida. He pleaded not guilty and was held without bail as a flight risk. On August 10, 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City; the medical examiner ruled his death an apparent suicide by hanging. His death terminated the 2019 federal proceedings before any conviction or sentence on the sex trafficking charges. As of February 2026, the DOJ has released over 3 million pages of investigative files but stated that 'no further prosecutions are expected' in the Epstein matter. His associate Ghislaine Maxwell was subsequently convicted in December 2021 of sex trafficking and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
