Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary and Harvard President, maintained correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein until July 5, 2019—one day before Epstein's arrest on sex trafficking charges. According to House Oversight Committee documents released in November 2025, Summers and Epstein exchanged emails from 2017 to 2019, with Summers seeking Epstein's advice on pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman he described as a mentee. Flight records show Summers flew on Epstein's private plane at least four times, including three flights while serving as Harvard president from 2001-2006. Epstein donated $9.1 million to Harvard between 1998 and 2008. After the emails were disclosed, Summers stated he was 'deeply ashamed' and accepted 'full responsibility for my poor judgment in maintaining communication with Mr. Epstein.' He subsequently resigned from his positions at OpenAI, the Center for American Progress, and stepped back from public commitments. No Epstein survivor has alleged wrongdoing by Summers, and there is no public record evidence suggesting Summers was involved in Epstein's crimes. President Trump announced plans to investigate Summers' relationship with Epstein, and the Department of Justice opened an investigation.
